Rajasthan is known for its folk music ,folk musical instruments and folks musicians.The desert regions of the state are specially rich in folk music.Particularly in the variety purveyed by the professional singing communities.The important singing communities are Mirasis ,Dhadhis,Langas,Manganiyars,Kalbelias(Snake charmers),Jogis,Sargadas,Kamads,Nayaks or Thoris and the Bhawaris.


Rajasthan is also a heaven for a wide spectrum of wildlife.It is a home to tigers,black bucks,chinkara,rare desert fox,endangered caracal,the great Indian bustard,gavil,monitor lizard etc.Every year the state attracts a large variety of migratory birds,like the common cranes,demoiselle crane,imperial sand grouse,falcons,buzzards.......

The festival time in the state is full of life and zest and the ambiance acquire a fairytale-like atmosphere.The colourfully dressed women adorned with their best jewellery and men folk with exotic turbans join the celebrations.

Jaipur

The 'Pink city' has been the capital of erstwhile Jaipur state since its inception in 1727 AD.It was founded by Swai Jai Singh II,who was a great ruler as well as a renowned mathematician and astrologer.Vidyadhar Bhattacharya,designed Jaipur as per the Hindu treatise,Shilp Shastra.In 1876,Jaipur dressed it self in pink to welcome prince Albert,consort of queen Victoria and earned epitaph 'pink city'. The excellent handicrafts of Jaipur are exquisite gold jewellery enamelled or inlaid with precious stones,blue pottery ,carving on wood,stone and ivory,block print and tie and die textiles,hand made paper etc.

City Palace

The Palace is a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture.It houses a seven storeyed Chandra Mahal in the centre,which affords a fine view of the gardens and the city.Di wan-i-aam,has intricate decorations and manuscripts.Dwain-i-Khas has a marble paved gallery and Mubarak Mahal has a rich collection of costumes and Jewellery.

Jantar Mantar

It was built in 18th century by Maharaja Swai Jai Singh and has huge masonry instruments,that were used to study the movement of constellations and stars in sky.

Jal Mahal(6kms)

The small but beautiful palace on the way to Amer is set in the middle of Man Sagar Lake.

JaiGarh(15 kms)

It is a perched atop a hill,overlooking the palaces and city of Amer.The world Biggest Cannon on wheels- Jai ban ,is positioned here.It was built by Maharaja Swai Jai Singh.The cannon has a twenty feet long barrel and the wheels are nine feet in diameter.For a single shot from the cannon ,100 kg. gunpowder has to be pumped in.

NaharGarh(15 kms)

The Fort was built in 1734,its walls run along the ridge and within are architectural beauties like Hawa Mandir and Madhvendra Bhawan. Know More......

Amer(11 kms)

It was the capital of the Kachhwahas for six centuries,before the birth of Jaipur.Amer Fort stands a top a range of craggy hills and is remarkable as much for the majestic grandeur of its surroundings as for its sturdy battlements and beautiful palaces.It is a fine blend of Hindu and Muslim architecture.The solemn dignity of its red stone and while marble pavilions,set alight by the setting sun on summer eve,when reflected in the lake at the foot of the hill is the sight to behold.The palaces complex is lavishly ornamented,sheesh mahal is considered by the many as the world's best chamber of mirrors.Diwan-e-Am or the 'Hall of public audience' is a beautifully proportioned hall,open on three sides and stands on two rows of ornamented,pillers.Diwan-e-Khas ,or the 'Hall of the private audience' has delicate mosaic work in glass.Sukh Mandir is guarded by sandalwood doors,inlaid with ivory.Through out the massive fort ,finely carved lattice -windows,exquisitely painted doorways,halls and finely sculptured pillers crave for attention.
Amer was earlier held by the Mina tribesman,it was won by Dhola Rai for the Kachhawahas.The old township lies at the foothills of the palace,which reflects the charm and history of the bygone era.Worth seeing sites are Jagat Shiromani Temple,Narsingh ji temple and panna Mian Ki Baoli.

Samode (40 kms)

A quaint village amidst the hills is known for the Samode palace,set in fairy tale surroundings.It has beautiful wall paintings and mirror work.Now it has been converted into a heritage hotel.

Ramgarh(28 kms)

The huge artificial lake ,which fills up in the rainy season ,makes a popular picnic spot.The ruins of the old fort and the temple of Jambaya Mata (Kuldevi of kachhawahas),indicates that it was the seat of power of the kachhawahas before they moved to Amer.

Sanganer(16 kms)

Famous centre of hand block printed textile and hand made paper.It also has historical ruins and Jain temples.

AJMER

The historic town derives its name from Ajaymeru(the invincible hill)and is believed to be founded in the 7th century by Ajaipal Chauhan.The Chauhans dominated the regions till the end of the 12th century ,Prithviraj Chauhan was their last great ruler and was defeated at the hands of Muhammad Ghori in 1193.Later on ,Akbar annexed Ajmer to his empire.Sir Thomas Roe,the ambassador of king James I of England ,presented his credentials to Jahangir over here on 10 Jan. 1616.Dara Shikoh,the eldest son of the Shah Jahan was born in Ajmer.From 1818,onwards it came under the domain of the British empire,who left behind a legacy of excellent educational institutions.

Dargah Khwaja Sahib

The landmark of Ajmer is one of the holiest Muslim shrines in the country and is revered by all the sects.Millions of pilgrims within the country and abroad come here to pay homage at the shrine.The Dargah is the final resting place of the great Sufi saint -Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti-the Bestower of Boons.The tomb is richly adorned with gold and silver.

Adhai-Din -ka Jhonpra

This relic of an old mosque is one of the masterpieces of Indo-Islamic architecture.It was originally a Sanskrit college with in a temple.According to legends,Mohammad Ghori after conquering Ajmer in 1193,ordered to built a mosque here in two and a half day(Adhai Din) for his prayers

Taragarh Fort

The formidable fort perched a top a hill was formerly known as Ajay-Meru-Durg.
Abdullah Khan's Tomb
The white tomb of later Mughal period stands majestically in the centre of the city. Some other places of interest in and around the city are Ana Sagar,Ajay pal ji ,Anted Ki Mata ,Dadabari,khobra Bherron,Magazine,Nasiyan(red temple),Rajputana museum etc.

Alwar

'The Tiger Gate' of Rajasthan is located 150 kms from Jaipur in the cradle of Aravali hills.It has a perfect picture postcard setting and looks as if carved magnificently out of jagged,craggy rocks.The harsh hills are surrounded by lush green deciduous forests and lakes,dotted with architectural splendour.The deep valleys and thick forest cover is a haven for many species of birds and animals.It is one of the oldest cities of the state and its prehistoric and historic sites are an archaeologists delight.It was a part of Matsya Desh and is believed that the legendary Pandvas,spent the last year of exile over here in the city of Viratnagar.

Bala Quila

The fort situated on a steep cliff,provides a breathtaking view of the city.It has been a standing witness to the crumbling history of valour and chivalry.The most distinguished visitors to the fort were the mughal emperors Babur and Akbar,on his way to Fathepur Sikri in 1579.

City Palace or Vinay Vilas Mahal

The Palace was constructed in the 18th century and its architecture has the influence of both Mughal as well as Rajput styles.The palace museum houses rare manuscripts,paintings,objects made out of jade,ivory,silver etc. and a large collection of weapons.

Government Museum

It has probably the richest treasure of the Rajput and mughal paintings of 18th and 19th centuries and some rare and ancient manuscripts.Behind the city palace are various temples on one side of the banks of a beautiful lake and on the other side is an impressive cenotaph known as Moosi Maharani ki chhatri.
Purjan Vihar or Company Garden
The beautiful garden which was laid during the reigns of Maharaja Shiv Dan Singh in 1868.It has an enchanting setting,known as 'simla',which was built by Maharaja Mangal Singh in 1885.Other places to see are Vijay Mandir Palace and Moti Doongri fortress.

SILISERH(13 kms)

It is a beautiful spot amidst serene surroundings ,replete with natures bounty.Built as a summer retreat ,it is an enchanting place set in the most alluring landscape.The tranquil lake nestled in the hills has is surrounded by thick forest and magnificent cenotaphs on its embankment.A royal Hunting Lodge/Palace was built by Maharaja Vinay Singh for his queen Shila in 1845.It has been converted into a tourist bungalow and is an enchanting spot for peaceful holiday.

Sariska(37 kms)

It lies on the Delhi -Alwar -Jaipur road,nestled in the quaint surroundings of Aravali's.This thickly wooded part throbs with life and endurance.It is not only a delight for wildlife lovers but also for the followers of art and archaeology.

Bharatpur

The 'Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan' is well connected with three most important tourist destinations of India,namely Delhi(176 kms),Agra(55 kms)and Jaipur (176 kms).Bharatpur is better known for the Keoladeo National Park,a unique bird place,recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site.It also holds an important place in the Indian history.The Jats have dominated the region from 17th century and Suraj Mal was the greatest ruler,who made them a formidable force.

Keoladeo National Park

A paradise for avian world,houses more than 375 species of beautiful birds.The kingfishers,pelicans,Siberian cranes,open billed storks,painted bill storks,egret,ibis,cormorant,darter or snake bird,spoonbill,grey heron are some of the exotic species observed.Not to forget are the trans-continental fliers-the migratory water fowls.Plenty of ducks species also show their presence and predatory birds attracted towards the park complete the avian food chain of the ecosystem.

Lohagarh

The 'Iron Fort' remained invincible to many British attacks.Some interesting monuments in the fort are Kishori Mahal,Mahal Khas and Kothi Khas.The government museum,within the fort has a rich collection of antiquities,exquisite sculptures and some ancient inscriptions.
The Jawahar Burjand Fatah Burj were built by Suraj Mal to commemorate the victory over mughals,The palace is a fine blend of Mughal and Rajput architecture.There is a museum in the main central wing,depicting collection dating back to 2nd century,which reflects the arts and skill of the region.

BIKANER

The beautiful town amidst harsh desert was founded in 1488,by the Rathore prince Bika.The fortified town still retains the aura of the medieval times.

Junagarh Fort

Raja Rai Singh built this impressive fort in 1593.It is encircled by a moat and houses many outstanding palaces,pavilions and temples made of red sandstone and marble with kiosks and balconies.Some places of interest inside the fort Anup Mahal,Ganga Niwas,Durbar Hall,Gaj mandir,Sheesh mahal,Karan Mahal etc.

Lalgarh Palace

The imposing red stone palace was built by Maharaja Ganga Singhin commemoration of his father Maharaja Lal Singh.

Ganga Singh Govt. Museum

It has a rich collection of antiquities from Harappan civilization,Gupta and Kushan era etc.Other places to visit in and around Bikaner are Devi Kund,camel Research Farm,Deshnok Karni Mata Temple,Gajner(32 kms),Kolayat ji(50 kms)and Kalibanga(205 kms)etc

CHITTAURGARH

It is renowned for the massive fort a top a hill covering an area of 279 hectares and can be singled out for its glorious past,full of chivalary and valour.The Fort has witnessed some of the bloodiest battles,three great sakas and some of the most heroic deeds of valour.

Vijay Stambh or 'Victory Tower'

The 120 ft. high tower was built in 1440,by Rana Kumbha to commemorate the victory over combined forces of Malwa and Gujarat.

Kirti Stambh

Kirti stambh or 'Tower of fame is dedicated to lord Adinath,the first Jain Tirthankar . The 22 ft. high structure is replete with figures from Jain pantheon.

Rana Kumbah's Palace

The biggest monuments in the fort is believed to be the place where Rani Padmini commited Jauhar,in one of its underground cellars.
Padmini's Palace
The magnificent palace near the pool is said to be the site where Ratan Singh showed a glimpse of queen Padmini to Alauddin Khilji.
Kumbha Shyam Temple
It was built during the reign of Rana Kumbha and associated with meera Bai,a mystic poetess and great devotee of lord krishna.Other important monuments are Mahasati ,Jaimal and Patta's Palace, Govt. Museum,Naulakha Bhandar etc.

JAISALMER

The glorious golden citadel of the Thar was founded by Rao Jaisal in 1156.Few cities can match the magnificence and grace of this 'museum city'.Today,the desert city blooms with intricately carved havelis and old Jain temples.The desert landscape also attracts many tourists to Jaisalmer.

FORT


The golden fort (sonar killa),built of Jurassic sandstone grows out of a rock in an undulating sea of sand,the entire living area is well protected inside the ramparts of the fort.It houses palaces and old Jain temples dating back to 12th-15th century.The fort is approached from Ganesha Pol,Suraj Pol,Akshay Pol,and Hawa Pol.

Havelis

The better Known Havelis are the Patwon ki haveli,the largest and most elaborate of all.The five storeyed haveli has extensive corridors and chambers.Nathmal ji ki haveli,was carved by two brothers and Salim Singh ji ki haveli,has the upper story in cantilever style,supported by carved brackets.
Other attractions of Jaisalmer are Tazia Tower,Jain Temples,Gadisar Lake and Folklore Museum etc.Worth visiting sites around Jaisalmer are - Bada Bagh,Akal(17 kms),a wood fossil park;Lodurva(16 kms)-an important Jain pilgrimage centre and Sam (45 kms),the camel safari at the sand dunes and sunset point are unforgettable.

JODHPUR

Jodhpur,popularly known as 'Sun City' or 'Blue City' was founded by Rao Jodha in 1459.The old city was once fortified and surrounded by a nearly 10 kms.Long wall with eight gates facing in various directions.The city is situated at the foothill of a hillock ,crowning it is the magnificent Mehrangarh fort.Jodhpur also boasts of a rich heritage and culture.

Mehrangarh Fort

The imposing structure built in 1459,is a standing sentinel to the grandeur of the past.It houses a palace intricately adorned with long carved panels and latticed windows,exquisitely wrought from red sandstone.The apartments with in have magic of their own -the Moti Mahal(Pearl Palace),Phool Mahal(Flower Palace),Sheesh Mahal(Mirror Palace),Sileh Khana and Daulat Khana exhibit a rich and varied collection of palanquins,howdas,royal cradles,miniature paintings,folk music instruments,costumes,furniture and an impressive armoury.

Jaswant Thada

The memorial of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II was constructed in 1899.It is a marvel in white marble.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

The exquisite palace built by Maharaja Umaid Singh (1929-1942)splendid example of Indo-colonial and art deco style of 30's.The unique feature this palace is the fact that hand chiselled sand stone blocks have been put together in a special system of interlocking ,there is no mortar binding.There is a fine museum inside.
Mandore Garden
The ancient capital of Marwar is 9 kms.,from Jodhpur.The extensive gardens here are beautifully laid with high rock terraces.The 'Hall of Heroes ',houses sixteen gigantic figures,chiselled out of one single rock and the nearby cenotaphs makes it a popular picnic place.
Kailana Lake
The charming artificial lake on the Jaisalmer road is a fine sunset point.
Osian(65 kms)
The ancient town of Thar desert is an archaeologists delight.It is surrounded by golden sand dunes and has sixteen Brahamanical and Jain temples,beautifully sculpted and designed,most of them have with stood the ravages of time.Sachchiya Mata and Mahavir Jain temples are the largest and functional among the surviving temples.

KOTA

The 'industrial capital' of Rajasthan is set on the banks of river Chambal.It still retains the charms of the bygone era,which lingers in its forts and Palaces.Jait singh of Bundi defeated the Bhil chieftain Koteya and laid the foundation of an imposing fort on his severed head.

GARH(Palace fort)

The fort is an imposing structure standing besides the river chambal.The large complex also called as city palace,dates back to the time when kota was a part of the Hada RajputKingdom.The Durbar hall has marvelous mirror work,ebony and ivory inlaid doors and houses an impressive collection of Rajput miniature paintings of the Kota school.Majestic haveilis with beautiful frescoes ,royal cenotaphs,Brijraj Bhawan Palace ,Jag Mandir etc.are the remainders of a grand past.
The Maharao Madho Singh Museum inside the old palace has a rich collection of Rajput miniature paintings of the Kota school ,exquisite sculpture,frescoes and a good collection of weaponry.

Chambal Garden

It is a beautiful picnic spot at Amar Niwas in the lush green surroundings.Boating is a big attraction over here.Other places of interest in kota are Government Museum,Jag Mandir,Haveli of Devtaji,Kota Barrage,Kansua Temple with rare four faced Shivlinga,Bhitria Kund etc.

Bundi

Beautiful Bundi Hada Chauhans is set along a narrow gorge and is enclosed by walled fortification .Perched on the hills,above the town are the fascinating Hada places ,with tier upon tier of terraces ,overhanging balconies and battlement walls ,presenting a striking view.It still retains a medieval aura and one gets the felling of having stumbled upon a page of history.Bundi is well known for the intricate paintings and murals and the baoris or steep wells.

Chhattra Mahal or Palace of Towers

It was built in 1660,by Rao Raja Chattar Sai .The Hazari Pol ,Naubat Khana ,the Hathi Pol with its curious old water clock and Dwain-i-Am are some other places of interest.
The impressive white fort crowning the wooded hill is noted for the huge water reservoirs.The palace below Taragarh is the finest monument of pure Rajput architecture,with intricately carved brackets ,balconies,pillers and sculpted elephants.Chitra Shala is beautiful pavilion inside the palace decorated with miniature paintings and murals of the Bundi school.Prior permission is required to see the Chitra shala.The other interesting palaces are Phool Sagar Palace,Sukh Mahal and Sar Bag which has 66 richly carved royal cenotaphs.

Mount Abu

The only hill resort of Rajasthan is also a major Rajput and Jain Pilgrim centre.The legend goes that a 'yagna' was performed here and four Agnikula or Fire born Rajput clans-the Chauhans,Parmaras,Partiharas and Solankis were created out of the fire.When ascending the mountain ,the grandeur and the scenic beauty impresses the visitors.

Dilwara Jain Temples

The world renowned temples are the greatest draw of mountain Abu.The exteriors are quite simple and one is quite unprepared for the splendour of the interior that awaits.The main group constructed between 11th and 13th centuries consists of five temples,which are marvels in white marble.These temples are known for their ornate carvings.

Nakki Lake

The artificial lake is believed to be dug out by the god's with their nails (Nakhs). The town forms an amphitheater around this lake.The Toad Rockshaped like a giant toad,overhangs the placid water and seems as if it is ready to dive in the blue waters of the lake.Near the Nakki is the temples of Raghunathji.South-west of Nakki is an enchanting Sunset Point.

Temples of Vashishtha and the fire pit

The ancient site where Agnikula Rajputs are said to have been created are quite interesting and old sites.Om Shanti Bhawan,also known as the universal peace hall is the Brahma Kumari 's World Spritual University.Other places of interest are Adhar Devi Temple ,Guru Shikhar ,Achalgarh etc.

Pushkar,Ajmer

11 kms from Ajmer,the Nag Pahar (snake mountain) stands between Ajmer and Pushkar.It is one of the most revered places for Hindus.According to Padam Purana,Lord Brahama was in search of a suitable place for a Vedic Yagna (sacrifice)while contemplating ,a lotus fell down from his hand on the earth and water spurted from three places,one of them was Pushkar and Brahama decided to perform his Yagna over here.The beautiful lake is a sanctified spot ,surrounded by 25 bathing ghats .The biggest attraction is the temple of lord Brahama the 'lord of creation'. Pushkar fair ,is the largest cattle fair in the country ,held every year on Kartik Poornima (full moon in Oct.-Nov.).

RANTHAMBHOR Wild Life Sanctuary

The small village near Swai Madhopur (10 kms),gets the name from the two hills,Ran and Thambhor which are in close proximity.The age old massive fort is built on the Thambhor hill and is considered to be one of the oldest forts in the state.The massive ramparts and the mighty gates of the fort have faced many attacks valiantly.The chivalry of king Hammier is still remembered ,who faced Allaudin Khilji gallantly against all odds.The fort houses many palaces ,most of which are ruins.

Badal Mahal

The 'Palace of the Clouds' in the fort has a very interesting location and looks as if hanging out in space.The famous 84 columned chhatri of king Hammir ,stands out magnificently where he used to held audience and entertained.The most interesting and famous place in the fort is the temple of lord Ganesha. Thousands of people visit this shrine on the occasion of Ganesha Chaturthi.This sacred shrine receives a big mail consisting of mainly wedding invitations for lord Ganesha ,from all parts of the country.

Ranthambhor National Park

It is a tiger's heaven and one of the most popular destinations on the wildlife circuit in India.Besides tiger one encounters other members of animal kingdom as well ,like -chital,Sambar,nilgai,chinkara,leopard,hyena,jackal,fox,caracal,sloth bear,jungle cat etc.More than three hundred varieties of birds can be seen here.

Shekhawati

'The garden of Shekha',known as the 'open air art gallery' of Rajasthan is spread over Jhunjhunu ,Sikar,and Churu districts of the state.The region is unique as no where else in the world one can see such a profusion of exquisite wall paintings.

CHURU

It is a famous for kothari haveli,Kanhaiya Lal Bagla Haveli,Surana haveli with marvelous life size paintings of Dhola Maru,Sassi Punu etc.

Jhunjhunun

The capital of Shekhawati has artistically painted havelis of Marugh Das Tibriwal ,Mahau Das Modi and the Khaitans.The khatri mahal (wind palace)is known for its purity,the Bihari ji Temple is decorated with ornate frescoes.Other important places are Badalgarh ,Jorawargarh ,Mertani Baori,Kamruddin Shah ki mosque etc.

City Palace

The imposing white edifice on the banks of lake Pichola is the largest palace complex of Rajasthan.The main gates to the palace are 'Hathi Pol','Bara Pol' and 'Tripolia Gate'. Lake Palace or Jag Niwas

The white wonder amidst the turquoise waters of lake Pichola is the best example of Mughal Rajput architecture. Jagdish Temple It was built by Maharana Jagat singh in 1651 and is the largest and most splended temple of Udaipur. Saheliyon Ki Bari The 'Garden of Maidens' laid on the embankment of Fateh Sagar ,appears discreet and impeccable in taste. Bhartiya Lok kala The museum of folk art displays a rich collection of folk dresses ,ornaments,puppets,dolls,folks,musical instruments etc.

Nathdwara
