नेपाल के बरियारपुर में 28 नवंबर से शुरू हुए गढ़िमाई पर्व में प्रथा के नाम पर लाखों जानवरों को मारा जाएगा। हर पांच साल में एक बार आयोजित होने वाले इस पर्व में भैंस, बकरी, भेड़ सहित कई अन्य पशुओं की बलि दी जाती है। मान्यता है कि पशुबलि से देवी-देवताओं को खुश किया जा सकता है और बदले में समृद्धि और ऐश्वर्य का वरदान प्राप्त किया जा सकता है। आधिकारिक सूत्रों के अनुसार, वन्य जीवों के संरक्षण के लिए काम करने वाले संगठनों ने इसका कड़ा विरोध किया है लेकिन इसके बावजूद हजारों की संख्या में पशुओं-पक्षियों को धार्मिक अनुष्ठान की आड़ में मारा जाता है।
बारा जिले के एक अधिकारी योगेन्द्र दुलाल ने बताया कि मंदिरों में सुबह से ही हजारों की संख्या में श्रद्धालुओं का पहुंचना शुरू हो गया है और पशुबलि का अनुष्ठान धडल्ले से हो रहा है। इसकी शुरूआत पांच पशुओं, एक बकरी, एक चूहा, एक मुर्गा, एक सूअर और एक कबूतर की बलि के साथ की गई। इस मौके पर पांच हजार भैंसों को एक खुले मैदान में बांध कर रखा गया था और उनकी बलि के लिए बडी धारदार तलवारें तैयार करके रखी गई थीं। शनिवार तक चलने वाले इस धार्मिक उत्सव के दौरान बड़ी संख्या में बकरे और मुर्गियों की बलि भी दी जाएगी।
मंदिर के पुजारियों ने बताया कि बलि के बाद इन जानवरों के सिर जमीन में गाड़ दिए जाएंगे, जबकि उनकी खाल व्यापारियों को बेच दी जाएंगी।
बलि के दौरान जीव संरक्षक संगठनों के कार्यकर्ताओं और श्रद्धालुओं के बीच किसी तरह के टकराव को रोकने के लिए धार्मिक स्थलों के आसपास बड़ी संख्या में सुरक्षाकर्मी तैनात किए गए हैं।
काठमांडू से करीब 100 किलोमीटर दूर बारा जिले में होने वाले इस पर्व में पिछली बार (साल 2009 में) करीब 250,000 पशुओं को मारा गया था।
इतने बड़े पैमाने पर जानवरों को मारने की इस प्रथा का काफी विरोध भी होता है। पशुओं के हित में काम करने वाली संस्थाओं के अनुसार, यह क्रूर प्रथा है और इसे बंद किया जाना चाहिए।
ह्यूमेन सोसाइटी इंटरनेशनल के निदेशक जयासिम्हा नुगूहल्ली ने इसके बारे में कहा, "जमीन पर बिखरा अथाह खून, दर्द से तड़पते जानवर और इस दृश्य को देखते छोटे बच्चे। यह काफी क्रूर है। हजारों श्रद्धालु जानवरों के खून से सने होते हैं। यहां तक कि कुछ श्रद्धालु जानवरों का खून भी पी रहे होते हैं।"
